  • Description

Described by Bob Harris as a "wonderful singer songwriter", what connects Everyone Is From Somewhere Else to its predecessors - especially 2013's well received Corner of My Eye - is Lowri's sublime vocals. Blessed with "a voice so distinct and special that she sings as easy as one breathes" (Fish Records), Lowri has that rare ability to immediately bond with an audience, transporting them to the emotional heartland of every song she sings.

To build on the momentum created by Corner Of My Eye, Lowri decided to inject new blood into the mix by handing production duties - usually the province of herself and musical partner Lee Mason - to acclaimed Mason Neely (Cerys Matthews, Sufjan Stevens, Lambchop). It proved to be an inspired move. Mason has kept faith with the elements that have drawn fans to her cause - Lowri's wondrous vocals and melodic songs - but broadened her acoustic guitar driven sound with strings, piano, keyboards, percussion, drums, double bass and electric guitars, encapsulated on lead track, the deceptively upbeat 'Don't Know Why'. As Lowri observes, "Mason tapped into my spirit of adventure and encouraged me to push my writing and arrangements into exciting new directions."

Neely also encouraged her to write from a more personal perspective, a process assisted by collaborating with renowned songwriters Sam Genders (Tunng, Diagrams) on 'Wanted Heart', Henry Priestman (The Christians) and Pete Riley (Edwin McCain, Amy Wadge) on 'Piece Of Me' and 'Stars'. "Song writing has normally been a covert operation for me," Lowri notes with a grin, "Collaborating with these guys has helped me unlock a few doors and broaden my horizons."

Lowri's lyrics, as she reflects upon the human condition, are infused with insight, empathy and emotion. Thus the heartbreak of 'Seventeen' is inspired by events of World War One while the broken dreams of 'Somebody's Girl' hones in on the pain of loneliness. Elsewhere in 'Piece Of Me' Lowri engages with the sense of anger we feel at the end of a relationship, taps into the wistful heartbeat of estrangement on the title track and confronts an ex-lover with the edgy rockin' twang of 'Who's Loving You Tonight' (featuring dirty electric guitar courtesy of Lee Mason). The tender song of hope that is 'Stars' is genuinely touching while the open heart surgery of 'We Were In Love' features a great jazz inflected vocal from Lowri and the inevitability of heartache and longing is sublimely captured in 'Rolling On'. The lonesome need for companionship and a place to be is poignantly caught in 'Wanted Heart' - Lowri's understated vocal on this track possibly one of the best she's ever committed to tape.

Everyone Is From Somewhere Else finds Lowri facing a future bright with possibilities. A significant landmark in her career, its ten beautifully crafted, highly melodic songs push the creative envelope while Lowri's distinctively wistful vocals sound better, more assured than ever.
