Five men came together in 1946 to form a sound all their own - the genre of music known as bluegrass. With their historic recordings of 1946 and '47, Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Chubby Wise and Howard Watts laid the foundation for the music as we know it today. As one of bluegrass music's most recognized ambassadors, Ricky Skaggs has always felt compelled to educate today's listener about bluegrass music's rich history. Alongside his award winning band Kentucky Thunder, Skaggs offers up this album to pay tribute to the music that shaped his life and career. Blistering bluegrass tunes such as "It's Mighty Dark To Travel" and "Bluegrass Breakdown" showcase the masterful instrumental standard set by their originators while delicate arrangements of "When You're Lonely", "Toy Heart" and "Remember The Cross" capture the magic and authenticity of their original recordings. Some of bluegrass music's most legendary performers lend a hand as well. Earl Scruggs, the only surviving member of the "original bluegrass band", adds his firey banjo to "Goin' Back To Old Kentucky", while another former bluegrass boy, Del McCoury, brings his unmistakable tenor to "The Old Crossroad".
Ricky has won numerous awards including 12 Grammys and 7 CMA Awards, 11 IBMA Awards, and BBC Radio 2 Listeners Poll Artist of the Decade. Recently he was awarded the 2008 Grammy for Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album of the Year for "Salt Of The Earth".
