  • Description

The Golden Striker Trio is led by the iconic bassist Ron Carter and also includes the stellar talents of pianist Mulgrew Miller and guitarist Russell Malone. This superb concert recording was captured in 2010 at the Jazzaldia Festival in San Sebastian on the final day of a two week European tour.

The group, which Ron Carter first put together for an album recorded for Blue Note in 2003, takes its name from a composition by pianist and Modern Jazz Quartet co-founder John Lewis. The piece was performed at the San Sebastian concert along with two distinctive originals from Carter's pen, Luis Bonfá's "Samba de Orpheu" and the standard "My Funny Valentine".

Given the title of the group it seems entirely appropriate that Ron Carter's thoughts on this group's working method seem aligned to the ethos of John Lewis and the MJQ "It's not just three guys going out and blowing off steam. The music has specific parts, specific effects, specific times. And we have spent time, thought and skill on this material - because it is demanding - to make it happen".

In an illustrious career which spans more than five decades, Ron Carter has played with a host of jazz greats including Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Wes Montgomery and others.

Personnel: Ron Carter (bass), Mulgrew Miller (piano), Russell Malone (guitar)
