These early Berg songs are far too seldom heard and this album allows the listener to hear 20 of these songs in superb performances by baritone Steven Kimbrough and soprano Margaret Jackson, accompanied by Mary K. Jackson.
Alban Berg was already writing songs of significance early in his career. These are substantial works, and they clearly show what is to come. Berg already had studies with Schoenberg, which had a major influence on his development as a composer.
Baritone Steven Kimbrough has been described as "a remarkable singer with a cultivated, easily flowing baritone of fine quality, and a rare command of words and rhythms" (The New Yorker) and "a master of vocal art (La Stampa, Rome).
