  • Description

Hermann Levi (1839-1900) was noticed early on in his hometown of Giessen for his musical talent; after studying music, he first worked as a bandmaster. In his early years, however, he also composed a great deal, especially songs, of which baritone Rene Perler and Edward Rushton at the piano have put together an illuminating selection.

The songs are combined with works by Robert Schumann and songs by the Austrian composer Hermann von Herzogenburg. Melodies by Duparc and songs by Johanns Brahms complete the programme.

The programme presented on this album was created at the very place that also plays a major role in Barrie Kosky's production of "Meistersinger": Haus Wahnfried, Wagner's Bayreuth residence for many years.

Edward Rushton plays Wagner's original Steinway grand piano, which the composer received as a gift from the Steinway & Sons company in New York in 1876.
