The album features a slew of JWHs long term collaborators: the backing band comprises old friends Peter Buck, Scott MacCaughey and Bill Reiflin of The Minus Five, not to mention their side project REM; Steve Berlin of Los Lobos; Kurt Bloch of The Young Fresh Fellows; long time singing partner Kelly Hogan; Mike Viola, of The Candy Butchers, who co-wrote three of the songs; and guitarist Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon). During the last five years, the songwriter (picked as Bruce Springsteens first opening act in 20 years) has written two novels under his real name Wesley Stace, both published by Jonathan Cape: the international bestseller Misfortune, nominated for a slew of awards including The Guardian First Book Award and by George, a New York Public Library Book to Remember of 2007.
