The combination of voice, flute and harp has produced a hauntingly beautiful debut CD from these two young musicians.
Rachel Newton and Lillias Kinsman-Blake first met while studying Folk & Traditional Music at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their music draws on influences from the Scottish Highlands to the Borders and beyond, incorporating both Gaelic and English songs with traditional and contemporary melodies.
The CD includes the aforementioned songs in Gaelic as well as from writers as diverse as Trad and Gillian Welch. Rachel is a fluent Gaelic speaker and before moving to Newcastle attended the City Of Edinburgh Music School. In 2005 she was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year. Lillias grew up playing flute and fiddle in the Scottish Borders. She is an experienced teacher and works as a core tutor for Folkworks and The Sage Gateshead. She was also commissioned to write and perform the music for the Rowan Tree Theatre company.
