Roger Doyle is used to breaking new ground, but never in his storied career has circumstance played such a part in his creative process as it has this year. iGIRL is a beguiling two act, double album opera that explores female grief, sorrow and sacrifice. However, from a composer whose stirring 1999 opus Babel took a sprawling 10 years, 103 pieces of music and 48 collaborators to complete, his latest work comes from a place of contrasting intimacy. iGIRL is an electronic opera, but not opera as you know it. The trained singers have been chosen specifically NOT to sound like opera singers. And because it's an electronic opera there is no live orchestra - the recording studio in this case takes its place. Making use of new music software the score at times creates an epic virtual orchestra; at other times it is heavily percussive evoking ancient and modern worlds. The lyrics are by by acclaimed Irish playright Marina Carr - the music composed by Roger Doyle, recently awarded the honour of 'Saoi' conferred on him by the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins - the highest award an Irish artist can be given, voted on by his peers. iGirl explores female grief, sorrow and sacrifice, and offers an insight into themes relevant in contemporary society. The work is inhabited by mythological and historical characters, and 2 present-day narrators, one of which is a woman living in contemporary times, and the other describing humanity's base desires and the ruthless survival of the fittest, of homo sapiens over the Neanderthals. This positions contemporary opera firmly in the 21st century.
