Description
This is an album of powerfully swinging jazz, rich in variety and played with great verve and commitment from the 1960's. It features sets by four outstanding and highly disparate American jazz stars - Phil Woods, Eddie Daniels, Stuff Smith and Leo Wright - backed by rhythm sections, lead by pianist Klaus Koenig, which adapt themselves sensitively and perceptively to the different styles of the guest soloists.
The first set, features star alto saxophonist Phil Woods, who went on to record with famous pop acts such as Billy Joel, Steely Dan and Paul Simon, and just about every jazz star you can imagine, including Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and Sonny Rollins. The next set is by renowned clarinettist Eddie Daniels, who has worked with Gary Burton, Dave Grusin, and Randy Brecker among many others.
Next up is Stuff Smith, who along with Joe Venuti and Stéphan Grappelli, was one of the pre-eminent jazz violinists from the swing era. Of all three though, he was arguably the most diverse, having worked with such musicians as Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, and Sun Ra to name just a few. Last but not least is the gifted Texan and bop-oriented alto saxophonist and flautist Leo Wright. Having started his career with vibraphonist Dave Pike, he went on to work with such venerable musicians as Charles Mingus, Junior Mance, Dizzy Gillespie, Ron Carter, Lalo Schifren, Stan Getz, Kenny Burrell and Jack McDuff.
Personnel: Phil Woods (alto saxophone), Eddie Daniels (clariney), Stuff Smith (violin), Leo Wright (alto saxophone, flute), Klaus Koenig (piano), Peter Frei, Isla Eckinger (bass), Pierre Favre, Alex Bally, Makaya Ntshoko (drums)
