Description
Cited by musicians and critics alike as one of the most underrated saxophonists of his generation and with more than five decades as a musician behind him, saxophonist Charles Davis was a contributor to the glory days of 50s and 60s jazz and an ever present force on the band stand and recording studio right up to the present day.
Charles has recorded under his own name and appeared as a sideman on more than 100 albums and worked with a venerable 'who's who' of jazz greats, including Jack McDuff, Sun Ra, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Elvin Jones, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin, Freddie Hubbard, Ahmad Jamal, Clark Terry and trumpeter Kenny Dorham to whom this CD is dedicated.
Recorded live at the Bird's Eye club in Basel, Switzerland during his 2009 European tour, Charles is joined by America's Tom Kirkpatrick on trumpet, Germany's Claus Raible on piano, Greece's Giorgos Antoniou on bass, and Austria's Bernd Reiter on drums. Charles, who is a fluent performer on soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, is featured exclusively on tenor.
Personnel: Charles Davis (tenor saxophone), Tom Kirkpatrick (trumpet), Claus Raible (piano), Giogos Antoniou (bass), Bernd Reiter (drums)
