Description

A formidable exponent of his chosen instrument, Brendan Power is equally at ease on both the earthy Blues Harp as well as the sophisticated Chromatic Harmonica. He employs his own custom tunings to breathe fresh life into a frequently stereotyped instrument, especially in his original compositions. In TRADISH, as the name implies, these derive from traditional styles such as Irish and Bulgarian folk music but add other elements such as blues scales, chordal rhythms and frequent improvisation passages to create a fresh synthesis derived from the harmonica itself - a unique sound in today's increasingly derivative acoustic music scene. A New Zealander of Irish extraction, Power arrived in London in 1992. He has recorded several CDs and played surprisingly high profile session work in a diversity of musical fields, from folk recordings to accompanying the likes of Sting, Mel C and even Shirley Bassey. On TRADISH he is accompanied, in different combinations, by the brilliant Aussies Stephen Cooney (guitar) and Greg Sheehan (percussion), ex-Planxty legend Andy Irvine (mandolin), Gerry O'Connor (tenor banjo) and top English guitarists Chris Newman and Ian Carr, amongst others. "In Power are combined all the elements which make for a master player: remarkable technical skill and a deep knowledge of the instrument" "Brendan Power reaches astonishing heights of technical brilliance" (The Guardian)
