  • Description

The debut album by gifted saxophonist Josephine Davies and her Quintet, featuring her great playing and compositional skills, with a band made up of the some of the best jazz talent on the scene today.

Josephine studied at the Guildhall school of Music and Drama with Stan Sulzman and Martin Hathaway, whilst there winning the 1999 Perrier Young Jazz Award with a quintet co-lead with trumpeter Tom Allan. On 'Perspective, Davies' unique compositional style uses the horns to create intricacy and counterpoint, at times blending with the piano to fabricate a third melodic voice. The band, though equally competent in various time signatures and unusual harmonic sequences, refrain from descending into ostentatiousness. They maintain a unified sound of refreshing honesty and subtlety but are unafraid to rock into to some heavy swing when the moment arises.

The Quintet is completed by: trumpeter Robbie Robson, national finalist in the Young Jazz Musician of the Year 1999, and the runner up in the Perrier Young Jazz Musician 2000. Pianist Ross Stanley, a fantastic young Guildhall graduate, is becoming a busy side man in his own right, playing with Jim Mullen, Gareth Lockrane, Gilad Atzmon and Prog Rock star Steve Howe. Dave Whitford is one of the most sought after British bass players, whilst drummer Nicholas Smalley has been working steadily with many prominent jazz musicians including Phil Robson, Guy Barker, Tina May, Alan Barnes and Julian Joseph.

Personnel: Josephine Davies (tenor saxophone), Robbie Robson (trumpet), Ross Stanley (piano), Nick Smalley (drums), Dave Whitford (double bass)
