Description

The widely acclaimed VOICE Of The PEOPLE series continues with four further volumes of the finest Traditional Song, edited by Dr Reg Hall and compiled by some of the foremost folksong experts. Noted folksong historian Steve Roud has compiled this important survey of ballads sung by British and Irish Traditional singers from recordings made in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The emphasis in the presentation of this series has been weighted towards the social lives and values of the performers. This volume, however, focuses on the history and meaning of the songs. It wasn't thought necessary by field collectors in the 1950s to enquire very deeply into the family and social background of the singers they were recording, with the consequence that they very often documented only thumbnail sketches. Some of the singers remain obscure, while others have subsequently become well known. Three CD set in slipcased digifile with extensive 140 page booklet.
