  • Description

In the preface to their 1893 publication English County Songs, Lucy Broadwood and J. A. Fuller Maitland describe 'outway songsters' who 'not only sang favourite songs [i.e. traditional songs and popular songs of the era], but also actually invented new ones themselves." The repertoire of the 'outway songster' certainly dominates on this album; this is a selection of some of Cohen's current 'favourite songs', mainly traditional songs with the odd Victorian popular song thrown in for good measure and one song he has 'invented' himself. Along with these songs come a few favourite traditional tunes of seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth century origin. Cohen has been performing with George Sansome and Lewis Wood as Granny's Attic for many years but more recently he has also been performing solo. Cohen is a wonderful traditional singer who has drawn his influences from some of the best singers around – past and present. He is also one of the best and most accomplished anglo concertina and melodeon player in the country. This debut album demonstrates his ability on both fronts.
