  • Description

Follow up to the 2010 release Koli that reached No1 on World Music Chart Europe. Piirpauke, the Finnish pioneer of World Music since 1974, has made a major comeback in the last couple of years andwWith Koli Piirpauke returned to the group's roots as a jazz band playing Finnish folk songs. The band leader Sakari Kukko (saxophones, flutes, keyboards etc.) and long-time Piirpauke member Ismaila Sane (percussion, vocals) were joined by the top-class jazz rhythm section of Eerik Siikasaari (bass) & Rami Eskelinen (drums) of Trio Töykeät fame as well as rock guitarist Jukka Orma (Sielun Veljet), who was soon replaced by Nicolas Rehn. The Piirpauke line-up was completed by trumpet player Kalevi Louhivuori for concerts and the Ilo sessions. Piirpauke has always featured excellent musicians - remember the World famous classical conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and guitarist Hasse Walli on the early hit Konevitsan kirkonkellot - but the current band is probably the strongest Piirpauke ever. These musicans feel equally at home with jazz, folk and classical music, and are able to create a unique fusion of different influences. On Ilo Piirpauke performs music by Finnish composers Merikanto and Lithander, some Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and South-Indian master Tyagajara as well as traditional songs from Tibet and Peloponnesos, Greece. This is the spirit of Piirpauke and this is World Music indeed!
