20 Years

20 Years by world/folk-punksters The Ukrainians features the band's 20 best-loved vodka-fuelled masterpieces cherry-picked from an astonishing two decade career. The Ukrainians' stunning 20 Years album bursts with 20 of the band's best-loved tracks from an astonishing two decade career. The tracks sound raw and fresh, as vodka-fuelled fiddles, accordion and mandolins interweave and battle with thrashing drums and zizzy electric guitars. The Ukrainians' cross-category appeal has meant that they have wowed audiences at hundreds of World/Folk/Roots as well as Rock festivals throughout Europe and North America, including both Glastonbury and WOMAD in the UK. In fact The Ukrainians created their intoxicating cocktail of traditional Ukrainian music and British Indie pop before the term World Music had even been coined, The Ukrainians released their eponymously-titled debut album 20 years ago in 1991, the same year that Josef Stalin's USSR fragmented and Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. Much will be made of this anniversary in Ukraine this year. Over the last 20 years the band has released a series of critically-acclaimed studio and live albums. These culminated in 2009's excellent Diaspora, an album about migration: the heartbreak of leaving family and homeland coupled with the excitement of starting a new life. The songs resonate strongly as tens of thousands of young Ukrainians, Poles and other eastern Europeans have made new homes in the West. The Ukrainians are also notorious for their Ukrainian language versions of classic Western pop songs. This album showcases their idiosyncratic interpretations of songs by The Smiths, Sex Pistols and Velvet Underground. Note, too, their song Emigranty borrows its melody from Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5.
