  • Description

From the beginning, monastic life as it developed in Syria and Egypt sought a very high goal: that of ceaseless communion with God in unbroken prayer. The Church had already inherited from Jewish origins a tradition of praying daily at fixed points, especially in the morning and evening. What modern Christians call the Divine Office, or Liturgy Of The Hours, came about through a fusion of those prayer services with a radical monastic attempt to remain in constant union with God. Here the monks of Glenstal Abbey take their Sunday Prayer with the Offices of Lauds, Vespers and Compline. Tracks: Morning Prayer (Lauds) - Organ Prelude / Introductory Verse / Hymn / Psalm 62 / Canticle Of Daniel / Psalm 150 / Scripture Reading / Short Responsory / Benedictus / Litany & Lord's Prayer / Conclusion. Evening Prayer (Vespers) - Organ Prelude / Introductory Verse / Psalm 109 / Psalm 110 / Psalm 111 / Psalm 112 / Scripture Reading / Short Responsory / Hymn / Magnificat / Litany & Lord's Prayer / Conclusion / Organ Postlude. Night Prayer (Compline) - Reading From The Rule Of St Benedict / Introductory Verse / Psalms 4, 90 & 133 / Hymn / Scripture Reading / Short Responsory / Nune Dimittis / Conclusion / Marian Antiphon: Salve Regina.
