  • Description

Found Music is the second album by acclaimed writer Amit Chaudhuri. A classically trained singer in the Hindustani tradition, his unique weaving together of raga, jazz, rock, blues, techno, and disco, which he has been performing since 2005, is one of the most original and exciting sounds, according to many critics, in contemporary music today. David Mossman, founder of the Vortex, says Chaudhuri’s project is ‘one of the most important I’ve heard in the last twenty years’; N Radhakrishnan, editor of Rolling Stone (India) calls him ‘one of the most talented musicians in India today’. Found Music takes its name from the non-musical art-world practice of placing existing objects into new contexts or arrangements, imbuing them with fresh meaning. It explores the possibilities of this idea by reinterpreting and subverting familiar songs and everyday sounds in radical new ways. The recording's opening song, 'On Broadway (postcolonial version)' re-imagines the American standard as a raga tune sung by a homesick immigrant Indian cook. 'Country Hustle' uses the 'Hi Ho Silver' chorus to conjure up Chaudhuri's childhood love of The Lone Ranger. 'Messages from the Underground (Break on Through)' not only plays with the familiar warning to Tube passengers, 'Mind the gap', but also, via The Doors’ 'Break on Through', explores the notions of mental freedom encapsulated by the band’s name. Featuring startlingly original versions of songs by John Lennon, Leonard Cohen and Brian Wilson alongside sly and refreshing new compositions and contemporary re-workings of traditional Indian ragas, Found Music defies categorisation and will delight music fans of every persuasion.
