Description
In his 50th year alto saxophonist Martin Speake celebrates by releasing his second recording on his own label. Following on from 2007's completely improvised duo recording with percussionist Mark Sanders Speake has chosen to record standard songs in a quartet featuring Barry Green on piano, Dave Green on bass and Jeff Williams on drums.The band developed from weekly gigs in London over the past two years with Martin, Barry and Jeff and various bass players. These residencies enabled the group to perform a vast amount of repertoire including many standard songs, original compositions, Charlie Parker and Ornette Coleman tunes and free playing. More importantly they developed a band sound that was finally completed with the addition of bassist Dave Green.
The music on the recording features 'standard' tunes with "Melancholy Baby" the oldest at nearly 100 years old and "All The Way" being the most recent, written 50 years ago. The band plays them as if they were their own original compositions, reinventing the forms with spontaneity and melodic and rhythmic imagination.
