Description
From the beginning, monastic life as it developed in Syria and Egypt sought a very high goal: that of ceaseless communion with God in unbroken prayer. The Church had already inherited from Jewish origins a tradition of praying daily at fixed points, especially in the morning and evening. What modern Christians call the Divine Office, or Liturgy Of The Hours, came about through a fusion of those prayer services with a radical monastic attempt to remain in constant union with God. Here the monks of Glenstal Abbey take their Sunday Prayer with the Offices of Lauds, Vespers and Compline.
